Zombie 101
Zombies are fictional beings created by reanimating a human corpse so it becomes the “undead”, “living dead”, or “walking dead”.
In the past, zombies were often the product of magic; however, more recently zombies typically come about from disease, radiation, or scientific accidents.
In the first half of the twentieth century, zombies were often portrayed as being henchmen controlled under the spell of an evil magician to do their bidding.
While in the second half of the twentieth century, and what we are currently more familiar with in modern media, zombies are often the flesh eating product of infectious disease or exposure to some crazy type of radiation.
Zombies were largely popularized into the mainstream by the 1968’s film Night of the Living Dead as well as the Dawn of the Dead film which came out a decade later.
However, the concept of zombies first appeared in Haiti during the 17th and 18th centuries; the concept being a projection of the African slaves who believed death would bring them back to Africa where they could be free.
Even further back, such as in the Middle Ages, zombies were often referred to as Ghouls, as it was thought the souls of the dead could return in order to haunt the living.
In this case, the dead were sometimes seen as coming back to life in order to exact revenge on a human who committed a terrible crime — such as a murder. In this case, occupying the rotting corpse or skeleton of a dead human, and typically emerging from graveyards.
In Norse mythology, zombies were referred to as “Draugr” and were warriors who were brought back to life to fight the living.
In Vodoun, a person who has died and comes back to life by a sorcerer can be seen as a zombie; here they are under the control of the sorcerer and have no free will.
In Haiti, it was believed that a person could turn into a zombie by mixing two chemicals together and introducing them into the bloodstream.
The first step was to introduce a lethal toxin known as tetrodotoxin, which is found in the pufferfish. In near lethal doses, it can place a human in a near death state for a few days while they remain conscious.
The next step was to add powerful psychedelics to induce hallucinogenic effects like datura to make them zombie-like.
The modern zombie is typically associated with a human being who is brought back to life in a state where they are not in control of their actions, not able to think properly, and are entirely focused on seeking out human flesh to eat.
As zombies seek out the consumption of human flesh, they are often found together with other zombies who are doing the same. And once a victim is found, the zombie or victim’s actions will alert other zombies who will come to feed.
Typically, becoming a zombie is often the result of some radical disease or radiation that is exposed to the general public. In affluent nations, the infected human typically first shows signs of a fever, dies, and then reanimates into a zombie.
Animals can sometimes also become zombies, although it is less commonly seen.
Are you looking for zombie costume ideas to portray a zombie for Halloween or cosplay? Along with a pair of zombie colored contacts, here’s what your costume should consist of and some of the characteristics you might want to adopt to become more zombie-like:
- Zombies are known for having bodies of a dead human, with rotting flesh that is literally falling off the bone.
- They are known for having severely reduced cognitive function; not being able to speak, think, see, hear, or smell properly like a human.
- An insatiable appetite for human flesh, human brains, or the desire to spread the infectious zombie-causing disease (usually by biting their victims).
- Attracted to loud noises, such as human screams, car alarms, or bright lights.
- Slower movement speed compared to that of humans that are alive.
- Inability to feel pain or be affected by it; zombies will seek out human flesh at all costs regardless of lost limbs or other body parts.
- Zombies do not require sleep, food, sex, or oxygen.
- Since normal biological systems aren’t a factor in their existence anymore, zombies can usually only be fully killed by destroying the brain.
Simply combine the above details and characteristics with a pair of our zombie eye contact lenses and you’ll be sure to make one killer zombie.
