The Dragon

Dragons are some of the most popular of the mythological creatures found throughout history and in many modern stories.

In fact, dragons appear throughout the world from places all over, such as Europe, India, China, and the Americas.

The origins of the idea of the dragon are unclear, however, large flying serpents were told by ancient Greeks and Sumerians.

Ancient people might have also found dinosaur fossils and believed them to be the fossils of actual dragons instead. For example, the stegosaurus was one such creature that was mislabeled as a dragon by a Chinese historian.

Extremely large crocodiles were thought to be a potential inspiration for dragons, such as the sub-Saharan Nile crocodiles, which are capable of reaching upwards of 18 feet in length.

One theory suggests that humans have such an ingrained fear of predators, thanks to evolution, that a dragon is the embodiment of many of those fears, which has then made its way into stories as the dragon.

Dragons were initially believed to be much like any other animal — that is, until Christianity, where dragons became creatures that represented evil.

Legends from Christianity tell how saints fought off Satan in the form of dragons. They even held titles such as St. George the Dragon Slayer, who saved a woman and a town by slaying a dragon that was trying to destroy it.

Also, the mouth of dragons was believed by some to represent hell itself; the opening of the mouth spewing out fire was seen as the entrance to hell — the flames, smoke, and all.

Dragons come in many different forms and with different characteristics. For instance, some dragons are capable of speaking while others are not; some dragons breathe fire while others do not; some dragons are much larger or smaller than others; and some dragons live in castles while others in caves or mountains.

“Dragon” is from the Greek word “draconta”, which means “to watch”. This makes sense considering dragons in stories are often guarding something valuable, such as Smaug from J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Interestingly, stories about dragons get even stranger:

It was told that armies could be raised from the teeth of a fallen dragon. And once the dragon was killed, its teeth could be stripped and planted in soil. Afterward, bronze plated and equipped soldiers would emerge from the earth ready to do battle.

Real dragons don’t seem to exist, however, that hasn’t stopped the tales of real dragons being cropped up throughout history.

One such example was about sailors from a few hundred years ago who claimed to have actually seen dragons. Although it is believed these were actually komodo dragons, which are significantly smaller and without wings — or fire.

Despite us not having any evidence of dragons, they still exist in the modern day through stories, lore, cartoons, video games, fantasy, fan-fiction, and when it comes to cosplay, Halloween, or crazy dress up.

As dragons have become more popular in the mainstream thanks to novels, TV, and movies, there are multiple reasons one would want to dress up as a dragon, and acquire a dragon’s stare.

If you’re looking for a simple dragon’s eye lens, then try a model from our cat series. But don’t let the name fool you; these lenses work perfectly for a dragon as the iris is elongated vertically to give that slit-iris effect that not only cats but reptilian creatures are known for. Choose from multiple dragon eye colors like yellow, red, blue, orange, and green.

Looking for something a little more detailed? Try or dragon cosmetic contacts that consist of multiple colors, such as black for the elongated vertical pupil, red for the iris, and yellow for the part of the iris that directly borders the pupil.
