Vampire 101

Vampires are probably the most well-known mythological creature of all time. They are known for coming out at night in order to hunt victims and feed upon them by drinking their blood.

Depending on the story, the vampire can be quite different from another stories vampire. However, most vampires use their teeth to drink human blood, which then either kills the victim or turns them into a vampire.

Typically, Vampires are extremely sensitive to sunlight, and usually do not have a reflection when looking through a mirror.

It’s also common for vampires to be able to transform into a bat or wolf. Vampires also tend to be very strong and have enhanced reflexes compared to normal humans.

The history of vampires is well known through famous classics like Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula; however, the history of vampires goes back much further than this.

Greek mythology is thought to have possibly been where the idea of the vampire originated from. According to one story, a young Italian man named Ambrogio fell in love with a woman named Selena after going to the temple of Apollo and meeting the Oracle.

Although after desiring the woman for himself, Apollo cursed Ambrogia with an affliction that caused his skin to burn when in contact with sunlight.

Vlad the Impaler was another popular figure thought to be responsible for inspiring what is now the modern vampire.

Vlad was from Transylvania, Romania and ruled during 1456-1462. He was thought to be an extremely cruel individual who dipped his bread in his victims blood and impaled his enemies on stakes to kill them. It is often believed Vlad the Impaler was at least partially responsible for Stoker’s Dracula.

During the Middle Ages, vampires were actually something that people were concerned with, as unknown diseases and illnesses were often associated with one being a vampire. For example, an illness where the skin is extremely sensitive to sunlight could be construed as vampirism back then.

Additionally, when those believed to be vampires had died, their corpses were disposed of in a way to prevent the vampire from potentially coming back to seek revenge. This included driving a stake through the heart, burning the vampire’s corpse, or decapitation.

Even back in the 1800s, people were still being accused of being vampires when strange things happened that couldn’t be explained.

For example, Mercy Brown was a woman whose family members along with herself had died to tuberculosis. Many of the townspeople blamed her as being a vampire and killing off her family members since her corpse was the most preserved of her families upon inspection.

In modern times, self-proclaimed vampires are people who drink the blood of others who allow them to do so. Some modern vampires even go as far as saying they require blood in order to feel at their best.

Other areas where you can find the modern vampire are in pop culture, such as the popular show Vampire Diaries.

Lastly, we come to the other area where you can find vampires in the modern-day, and why you’re likely here, and that’s to dress up as a vampire of some sort for cosplay or Halloween purposes.

If you’re looking to keep things simple, choose a classic pair of red vampire contacts that will change your iris from whatever your natural color is into a rich red color.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something a bit more complex or with a bit more detail, then choose a pair of vampire circle lenses with a unique design, such as our blood splattered vampire contacts. These cosmetic contact lenses consist of a design that looks as though blood is splattered across the iris and scleral portion of the eye. This is great for a damaged or bloody eye vampire look.
