The Werewolf

The werewolf is a mythological creature found throughout history in many stories.

The werewolf is described as a human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf or a hybrid wolf-human creature, typically either after a curse, at night, or in the presence of a full moon.

Although there are other cases in story where people have transformed into wolves, such as after wearing an enchanted sash, after being bit or scratched by a wolf, or upon wearing a magical cloak.

The effect that transforms a human into a wolf is a disease known as Lycanthropy.

The origins of the werewolf in history are unknown. However, some believe the first mention of a werewolf came from the Mesopitanian poem known as The Epic of Gilgamesh, where a woman turns her lover into a wolf.

Another place in earlier history where werewolves are mentioned is in Greek Mythology. According to the Legend of Lycaon, having angered Zeus by serving him a sacrificed human boy, Zeus turned Lycaon into a wolf.

In another story from the Nordic people, a father and sun were able to transform into wolves by wearing magical wolf pelts.

During the 16th century, there were at least a few serial killers who seemed to use werewolves as a part of an explanation for their killings. They had claimed to have used ointments that would transform them into blood-thirsty wolves, causing them to not only kill but to also eat their victims.

Another famous werewolf in history was Peter Stubbe. After admitting to killing animals and people, Peter claimed to be able to transform into a wolf thanks to the magical powers of an enchanted belt that he had acquired.

What you might find surprising is there are even recent cases in which humans have been shown to act like werewolves, or more specifically “wolf-like”, in the presence of a full moon.

A study out of an Australian hospital showed that a full moon actually makes people more “beast-like”. The study found that of 91 cases of violent behavior between 2008-2009, 23 percent occurred during a full moon.

If that wasn’t enough, these patients also acted very wolf-like by attacking others by means of scratching and biting.

Overall, werewolves have been used throughout history to explain things that were too strange at the time to understand. And even to this day, werewolf sightings are still being reported.

However, in the modern day we can also find werewolves in many other places besides stories and sighting reports, such as during Halloween time, at cosplay events, and in popular films, such as horror, thrillers, and even dramas like Twilight or Teen Wolf.
